Ann Jennings Maxwell Charleston - Ann Jennings Maxwell, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Dennis D. Maxwell, entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 2, 2021. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Ann was born March 10, 1935 in Greenville, South Carolina, daughter of the late John W. Jennings and Sarah Brawley Jennings. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dennis; three children: John Patrick Maxwell of Charleston, SC, Catherine Ann Heston (Edward) of N. Charleston, SC and Dennis Duffy Maxwell, Jr. (Amanda) of Asheville, NC; two grandchildren: Jaret Maxwell and Caden Maxwell; and sister, Sallie Patterson of Atlanta, GA. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Ann extended her knowledge of Spanish at the University of Mexico (Ciudad Universitaria, Mexico City). She then joined Special Services, the entertainment branch of the American military, and managed several clubs in Germany (Karlsruhe and Worms Am Rhein) where she met Dennis, the love of her life. Together they returned to the United States and lived in Winston-Salem, NC; Burnt Hills, NY; Arlington, VA; Easton, CT; Menlo Park, CA and Johns Island, SC. Ann worked over the years in raising three beautiful children while frequently packing and unpacking the family household as Dennis took corporate assignments at General Electric and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). At SRI, she worked with her husband at SRI conferences from Russia and India to Amsterdam and Mexico. Led by her love of art, Ann became involved with Stanford University's Cantor Art Center. She did volunteer work both at Stanford and in the Menlo Park community. She led Stanford art trips across the nation, from Seattle to Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and Charleston. In addition, Ann helped raise $30 million to repair and advance Stanford's Cantor Art Center that had been damaged in the 1989 earthquake. After moving to Johns Island, Ann became involved with the Gibbes Museum and was named as Volunteer of the Year. In retirement, Ann and Dennis traveled extensively, visiting every country in South East Asia as well as extensive visits to South America and Europe prior to making one last (but most memorable) move to Bishop Gadsden. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 9, 2021 in Blessed Sacrament, 5 St. Teresa Drive at 11:00 a.m. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gibbes Museum, 135 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
