I was Bill's resident in OLM in 1994 and sadly, some of us just got to know about his demise a year or 2 later. Almost all of us residents in OLM were foreign trainees and the standard practice was to call us by our last names. Bill was the only attending we had, who would take the trouble
of calling us by our first names, no matter how strange it may have sounded to him. That was his way of showing respect. And he would invite some of us to his home in Mt Kisco. There was no racist bone in his body. He was a brilliant and caring doctor; a diagnostic genius. Of course, working with him in the ICU meant that we would occasionally get mauled by that famous temper of his. I was lucky to have met him many times later on at the Annual CHEST meetings. His passing breaks my heart. May God bless you Bill, wherever you are

I met Bill many years ago through my first husband. He was a hiking partner for many years. After I had decided to go back to school and decided on nursing, Bill was the person who suggested I apply to North Central Bronx Hospital. I got my first job there. It was a great experience and I was happy that he had suggested it. He also worked there as an intern and resident. I also met Barbara while I was working there. Even at the beginning of his career, he gave his all to his patients, supported the staff, gave willingly of his knowledge and time. He was one of the best doctors I have ever known.
RIP Bill, you will be missed by many.

I just found out that Dr Marino passed away. One of the most dedicated Doctors I have ever encountered. He had such an incredible sense of humor and took bad moods and transformed them into Great moods. He treated his patients with respect and was always there if you needed him. It was an honor to have him care for me in my time of need, he took the time to listen, and treated his patients as family. I will miss him greatly. RIP "Doc", you are an example for others to follow. God bless.

Dr Marino was exceptionally brilliant, the best diagnostician, teacher, healer and mentor that I have ever met in all of my years in health care.
He never did anything halfway and expected the same from his staff and students. If you were willing to put in the work, Dr. Marino would do everything to teach you and impart his wisdom and knowledge.
If one had the misfortune of being critically ill and needing intensive care, there was an advantage to being in the OLM Medical ICU and that advantage was Dr. Marino.
The patient always was treated with respect, professionalism and expertise and the patient always came first.
There were many incidents where l would rely on Dr Marino’s advice and knowledge for my family.
If I just tell you this one story, it will clearly demonstrate the character, empathy, kindness and selflessness of Dr. Marino.
Rebecca (my daughter) was 9 years old and very ill,and being seen in the ER at OLM. The ER physician and staff did not thoroughly assess Rebecca and were missing the alarming signs and symptoms that she was displaying. I called Dr. Marino at home on a Sunday evening.
Dr. Marino spoke to the ER attending on the phone and the next thing I knew Dr. Marino was coming through the ER doors .
Dr. Marino put one hand under Rebecca’s neck and picked her up like a board. Rebecca had meningitis. Dr. Marino just looked at the ER attending and did not have to say another word.
Spinal tap was done, Dr.Marino brought the sample to the lab himself. Dr. Marino went to the pharmacy to obtain the IV antibiotics. Rebecca was admitted to the hospital and treated for bacterial meningitis. Today Rebecca is a healthy, happy 35 yr old with a career, and family.
I will say this : Thank You Dr. Marino because without you, life would have been very different.
With much Love and Gratitude, Síobháin, Jim, Rebecca, James & Síobhán McHale
