Michael N. Gregerson passed away on Saturday, September, 4, 2021 from pancreatic cancer. He was 73 years old. Michael was born on November 16, 1947 in Quincy, Illinois.
Mike attended Rochester Community and Technical College for two years before attending the University of Minnesota, majoring in Aeronautical Engineering. He re-enrolled at the University of Minnesota several years later, earning his Masters in Public Health. During this time, Mike also served in the United States Army Reserves. Mike was an avid fan of the Golden Gophers, and was always thrilled when the football team and men’s basketball team had winning seasons.
Following graduation from his Master’s degree, Mike found a career at Northern States Power (NSP), now Xcel Energy. Over the course of 30 years, Mike would hold many positions before retiring in 2004. After retiring from Xcel, Mike found great pleasure in energy consulting with Great Plains Institute, a position he held until full retirement in 2018.
Mike married the love of his life, Patti Stieler, in 1981. Together, they had three children, Aaron, David and Jane. He found immense joy in his children and family. He loved to go on camping trips with the family, visit the family cabin and ride the jet ski, work in the yard, or simply relax with his family around him. He was active in local community organizations, Boy Scouts, their church, and loved giving back whenever he could. Mike could often be found enjoying the sounds of his family around him while relaxing with a good book.
Mike was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. Above all else, he put his family first and went out of his way to help his children with whatever challenge was in front of them. Ever a handyman, Mike was always ready to lend a hand with home improvement projects for his children or just tooling around the house.
Michael was preceded in death by his Uncle Alfred and his in-laws Bill and Harriette Stieler. He is survived by his wife, Patti; their three children, Aaron (Kacey), David (Caroline), and Jane (Ian); his sisters Susan and Nancy, brother Kevin, and seven loving grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Hamel, MN on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 10:00 am. A celebration of life event will be held following the funeral at Burl Oaks Golf Club in Minnetrista, MN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are welcome.

I am so sad to learn that Mike has died. It doesn't seem possible to still that resounding guffaw of a laugh. I worked with and for him at NSP/Xcel. Mike was a major influence in my life and career and helped shape who I am as a leader and a working mother. His roles and influence with the company, regulators, environmentalists and vendors will continue to contribute to the area's well being for decades. I recall a story that he helped save a drowning Elder during a float plane accident and in gratitude he was granted special consideration with the people and their spirits. I imagine he is being aided now by many angels of all ilks given his generous outlook. My condolences to you, Patti, and your family. He was a good man.

Vern enjoyed working with Mike and for him. They had a neat relationship. Vern missed him, and wanted to get
in touch, but it was too late. Vern often remembered some of the things working with Mike, and a smile
would come his face remembering. Our sympathies are sent to Patti and Family.

Uncle Mike knew how to host a family holiday gathering. I remember his beaming smile in front of a massive turkey waiting to be carved and his deep belly laugh ringing through halls at Christmas time. I hope he is smiling & laughing now. ❤

I worked for Mike for several years at Great Plains Institute. He continuously made efforts to connect with and support colleagues on a personal level, and his presence brightened up the room. I am grateful for everything I learned from Mike. He demonstrated through action how to be a successful boss, mentor, and friend. His spirit lives on.

So saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I knew Mike because I was fortunate to have both worked for and with him back in the days of Northern States Power. I considered Mike both as a mentor and a friend. Even after after our careers took different paths, we liked to stay in touch. I looked forward to sharing our family Christmas letters each year, which many times resulted in a phone call to each other to get "the rest of the story". I will miss those calls. Even in our last call, Mike's concerns were more for others than himself. You see..... Mike was confident in his Faith and was ready for what comes next. Mike would want you to have that same confidence. So in closing....thank you Patti and kids for sharing Mike with us. We are all better because we knew him. God Bless. Don and Marcy Stickney

I met Mike in my bible study about 17 years ago. We eventually went to retreats together. Mike was a man that loved his family and Jesus Christ. Mike was a guy I talked to about personal things I needed perspective on and looked to for advice. I will miss him, but mostly, I am thankful he was part of my life.

Mike was the kind of brother who would come over, smiling, with a tool box (or saw, or drill, or a REALLY big hammer) in hand to help out when I had met my match on a home project. His confidence and love of a challenge calmed me. Some people demonstrate love through service--that was my big brother Mike. You are missed.

Mike was my older brother and always “had my back”. He was someone I admired, respected and loved with all my heart. He could fix anything and got pleasure from helping family and friends with projects. We both made the effort as adults to visit a couple times a year and stay in touch. I was able to spend the last 20 days of his life with him, Patti and all the kids, spouses and of course the precious grandchildren. When I asked him what he wanted from me, all he said was take care of Patti. He was the most selfless person I have ever met. He loved his wife, children, their spouses and those seven grandchildren more than anything. He will be missed every minute of every day . Gone but not forgotten. Love you Mike and always will, Sue❤

A wonderful man gone to soon. I worked with Mike at NSP/Xcel for several years. Mike’s hand always reached out to help many face challenges and opportunities, helping to remove obstacles and give confidence for so many to thrive and achieve. When you might not have had faith in yourself, Mike had faith in you. I’m sure this went well outside of his work life as well. He changed the lives of many and will be greatly missed. Thanks Patti and family for sharing him with all of the rest of us. Let this good man Rest In Peace.

I have many fond memories of Uncle Mike from my childhood. Jet-skiing, campfires, fireworks, fishing (with leaches – which was so unsettling as a kid), struggling to start the outboard motorboat, were all things I remember doing with him. They are such fun memories and strangely, the smell of DEET brings them back. Although I didn’t see him as often as an adult, he remained a presence. The handful of times I spent with him as an adult were always enjoyable – hearing about the family (especially the grandkids) and having great discussions. He was an amazing brother to mom and for that I am so grateful. We miss and love you Uncle Mike. To Patti, Aaron, David, and Jane, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Patti and family, what a loss! Mike was a force of nature but also just a flat out good guy. I knew Mike from the beginning our careers at NSP back in 1973. He made it fun to come to work then and then again when we joined forces in Eau Claire. Years ago I described him as the guy to call if you had a problem because he cared about people. Those of us who worked with him will never forget the laugh, the commitment and the unstoppable enthusiasm he had for life.
We will miss him even though we have not seen him for a while. We just liked knowing he was out there.

Mike was one of a kind. I was fortunate to work with him during the "Primergy" days. He was instrumental in my career, and although we lost touch over the years his impact on me has never lessened. Condolences to the family - I am sure the stories and memories will comfort you during the difficult days ahead.

Sad to hear of Mike’s passing. I worked with Mike and considered him to be a good person and a good friend. Mike was full of energy in his life. He brought that energy in his fight with cancer. Mike liked life and people and he was a pleasure to know.
