James Williams Obituary

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Matthew 6:33

James Michael Williams was born on July 31, 1962 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to the union of Jurrie Mae Williams and Lawrence Edward Williams, Sr.

James was a 1980 graduate of Marion High School and was a member of the basketball team and the band where he played the trombone.  He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge for a short period of time and returned to Lake Charles and became a longshoreman.  He worked for the Port of Lake Charles for over thirty years.  He was a member of International Longshoremen’s Association (I.L.A.) Local 2047.

James was a devoted husband, father and friend.  He loved the Lord and was an active and dedicated member of Warren United Methodist Church.   James was an inspiration to so many who battle addiction and a testament to what a strong belief in God can do in one’s life.  He was a member of Agape and celebrated 31 years of sobriety.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bridgett Lewis Williams; his mother, Jurrie Mae Williams; two daughters, Latyra Williams of Lake Charles, Louisiana and Latoyia Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; one bonus daughter, Nikesha (Derrick) Rodrigue of Prairieville, Louisiana; two brothers, Gerald Williams and Lawrence Williams, Jr. both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; two sisters, Nancy Ann Pitre and Barbara Disnuke both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; four granddaughters, Lailah Williams, Lana Wilson, Addison Rodrigue and Zoe Rodrigue; two grandsons, Lathan Williams and Derrick “DJ” Rodrigue, Jr.; one ward/goddaughter, Amaiyah (Me-me) Charles and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Williams, Sr. and grandson, Laine Michael Williams.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 9:00 a.m., and funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Warren United Methodist Church, Rev. Robert E. Campbell, officiating. Services will be live-streamed on Warren United Methodist Church's Facebook page. Burial will follow in Combre Memorial Park under the direction of King’s Funeral Home.

It’s unreal and overwhelming emotional and painful to lose you to this side cousin. We grew up playing together and having so much fun as kids. It was always a joy seeing you, talking to you, and just bring in your presence. The older you got, the more you reminded me of Uncle Lawrence. Little did I know when you and Bridget and Gerald drove to Houston for my surprise 60th birthday that it would be the last time I saw you. To walk in the room and see it traces was everything!!! You and Bridget took pictures with me, then you all gave me $61, and you said in your own quiet sweet way“happy birthday and one to grow.” I wish I could tell you the same, but I know it gets no better than where you are eternally with Jesus. I’ll love and miss you forever cousin. Gone but never ever forgotten. We’ll love Bridget real hard for you. Fly high and rest well.

My deepest sympathy to the Bridgett, my love, Mrs. Jurrie, my girls, Tyra and Latoyia, and the rest of the family. I have known Michael since he born, since I am older, we grew up in church together and our parents were friends. Praying for everyone that God will give you all the strength and comfort to deal with this loss and pain. Michael was such a gentle and quiet person, my mother loved her some Michael, he would often come by the house and check to make sure everything was alright and if she needed anything. Rest in Heaven my friend.

I’ve known Mr. James my whole life as he was one of my Daddy’s longest and best friends. When my father was sick and on hospice, he told him that he would look out for me and check on me. He kept that promise and I’m forever grateful for that! I was blessed enough to have him walk me down the aisle in my Daddy’s place for my wedding. That’s a memory that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. He always called me to check in every few weeks or so. I’m really going to miss that. As a new parent myself, I hope to be as loving and wonderful as Mr. James was. I always made sure I told him I loved him before we hung up the phone and he always said it back. Mr. James was a great example of a “standup man.” His legacy will always live on in the lessons and love he spread in his life. To his family, we’re praying for y’all continuously and thinking of y’all every day.
With love,
Sasha Dargin and Family
