Dan Lustgarten Obituary

Daniel M. Lustgarten, “Dan”, age 61, living in Valparaiso, IN and having grown up in Portage, IN, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 26, 2022.

Dan was born on April 10, 1961 in Gary, IN to the late Raymond and Norma (nee Allen) Lustgarten.  He was a graduate of Portage High School, Class of 1980 and still remained close with many of his high school friends. He met the love of his life, Peggy (nee Lewis), and married on November 9, 1991.  Dan was Peggy’s right hand man.  Together they raised two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth and Elaine, and always left room for one more, welcoming Brittany and others into their home.  Dan was a Union Carpenter with Carpenters Local 1005.

When he retired Dan continued his work by being the family handyman.  He could fix anything and was always proud of having things done just right.  He loved to fish and go camping.  Dan was one to make an entrance with his big personality and a smile always on his face.  He was very laid back and went with the flow.  He would do anything for anyone, especially for his family.  Dan was a devoted husband, beloved father, dear brother, uncle, and friend who will be immeasurably missed by all who were lucky to know him.

Dan is survived by his wife of 30 years: Peggy Lustgarten; daughters: Elizabeth, Elaine, and Brittany; sisters: Karen (Jim) Fain, Linda (Dan) Mesich, and Tammy (late Steve) Bell; many nieces and nephews; extended loved ones: Makayla Pritchett and her children: Kalliannah and Brayson; and many dear close friends.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents: Ray and Norma; brother: David Lustgarten; nephew: Michael Berrier; and brother-in-law: Steve Bell.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel (5341 Central Ave, Portage) on Monday, August 1, 2022 from 3:00-8:00 P.M.  A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 from Rees Olson Chapel at 11:00 A.M.  Cremation will follow services.

Dear Peggy, this is a Lustgarten cousin from PA. Though we’ve never met, my family lived right around the corner from Uncle Ray and Aunt Norma and family when I was little, and I played with Linda and Karen often. We are family, even so far away, so wanted to send our condolences and best wishes to you and the whole family. . Dan was born after we started moving around with my dad’s job (Bill, brother to Ray) and we heard family news even as we were moving around so much, so are saddened to hear of Dan’s passing. May many happy memories stay with you. Sending hugs and love to you all, Lynn (Lustgarten Sowden) and Bob

Dan was the nicest guy. Always good for a laugh. His wife is a great person just like them. Always love drinking into them out in public.

We knew Dan for awhile but we only saw him a couple times a year mostly sitting around the campfire enjoying the outdoors and sipping on the warm apple pie shots on a cool October night. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Peggy and your family. We will miss his smiling face. ❤
