On December 5, 2021, Mother Earth lost a great soul, musician, artist, and storyteller. His name was Charles Donald "Wsir" Johnson. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter.
A few online comments about Wsir:
"Wsir", loves to make musical pleasures for your mind, body and spirit....designing, hand-building, creating organic natural musical instruments, and then writes and creates sound from them through the creative spirit. Takes them to organic natural environments and lets the spirit and soul of the instruments speak...And collaborates with other musical spiritual humans that is open to creativity.and arts activism...not just for arts sake....and spontaneous creation..with no reward other than for the joy it brings...nuff said....

“I received your package last week and have been enjoying your music regularly. The rhythms are such an enjoyable cosmic blend that no matter how intense my work is, the music enhances my thought processes, never interferes--a meditative quality. And your art work is beautifully done--true characteristics of the African piece. Thank You.”
“...we love it here in Soweto... South Africa....give us the Amerikan Roots Soul and Wisdom.....”
“An artist from the hand to the creative spirit... ”
"Creativity is "Wsir's" genre...He IS an Wholistic artist when he creates"...

I hear you Wsir, drumming; the sound of your flute and two-string guitar. I hear your laughter; sense your spirit. Oh how your endless energy could wear on my last nerve! Yet, we’d stay the course until the last song was done. As different as we were, we were friends, and I will cherish that memory forever.

Mr Charles was on my mind real heavy tonight. I collaborated on his album talk N hands back in 2003, track number 4 “Just Hello.” I spent a lot of time with him in his home studio just talking about music and life. He had a wealth of knowledge and he really let me be free with playing my guitar. We recorded the song in just one take and he said he would add the percussions and voice later on. He brought the cd to me once it was completed and he played the finish product. It brought tears to my eyes. He was the first to record me in a studio session. The last time I spoke to him was In okolona about 5 years ago. He was telling me he gets more creative ideas in Mississippi and that he was going to create more content about his art and its African roots. I didn’t know he had transitioned, until I typed his name in my google search bar. I will keep his words in my mind and his drum beat in my heart. That’s what he told me one time, he said your heart beat is where the drum beat originated from and that we should aways play from the heart. He had a way of storytelling like no other. He will truly be missed, but he he will live on through his art. Thanks my friend ❤

Charles was one of the first young people in the 70s/80s, who was a health enthusist and one of the first African Americans to open a health fitness center in Oakland,CA. He was a free spirit with a creative mind and someone who always marched to his own drum. May you rest in peace.
