Andrew Buursma of Hart, Michigan, and Jensen Beach, Florida, was born into a black-and-white world in 1940 but he lived with technicolor vibrance throughout his life. He founded the Buursma Agency in Holland in 1964, collected eclectic and exotic cars, and served with enthusiasm and emotional intensity as a parishioner and longtime board president for Nettles Island Church in Florida and New Era Christian Reformed Church in New Era, Michigan.
Andy died of heart failure on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, in his Michigan home at the age of 81. He was the youngest of five children born to Martin and Martha Buursma, Frisian immigrants who settled in Holland, MI, in 1929 to raise their young family. Andy graduated from Holland Christian High School before a brief stint delivering candy to grocery stores and gas stations. He launched his career selling insurance after taking Dale Carnegie classes, which he credited with giving him the confidence to speak in public and to sell effectively.
He was well-known to his friends and clients for his attention to detail, his bottomless storehouse of jokes and anecdotes, and his bleeding-edge taste for bright and splashy apparel.
Andy is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Patricia (Patty) Buursma; his children, Kurt and Molly Buursma (Katherine Elizabeth Merrill, husband Hunter, and great-grandson Calloway), Keri (Buursma), and Mike Hall (Tara Figger, and great-grandson Harrison Figger); a sister-in-law, Barbara Buursma of Holland; and in-laws, Lois Stegink, Larry and Harlean Stegink, John and Eunice Stegink, Eileen and Jim Dolbee; and many nieces and nephews.
Andy was preceded in death by: his siblings and in-laws, Reverend William and Althea Buursma, Flossie and Simon VanderKooy, John Buursma, Kathy and Ken Lambers, Martin Stegink, Grethel Genzink, and Julie and Ed Berkompas.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 PM, Monday, July 25, 2022, at the New Era Christian Reformed Church, 1820 Ray Ave, New Era, MI 49446, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Sunday, July 24, 2022, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, 2370 North 72nd Avenue, Hart, MI 49420, and Monday from 11:00 AM until Noon at the church. Private interment will be in Graafschap Cemetery in Holland.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holland Christian Schools, 956 Ottawa Ave, Holland, MI 49423, hollandchristian.org/donate.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Grandpa- I will miss you more than you could ever know. Your constant jokes, your hugs, your laugh. My passion for cars comes from you, and I’m so grateful for everything, every memory we’ve had. I am so glad you got to meet your great grandson and pass along your love and your jokes. As always, I love you much.

Dear Patty & Family,
We were shocked to hear about Andy! You are all on our hearts and in our prayers as you go through this sad time. To say Andy lived in technicolor was spot on!! He could light up a room in a nanosecond and ALWAYS had at least one joke to tell, if not more!! He was so passionate about life and those he held close. We will miss his random phone calls, “just to check in”. We are forever grateful for his friendship and his servant heart. Much love to all of you.

I am so sorry to hear about Andy's passing. He was a great friend of the Terrill's and did a wonderful job as an agent in my Dad's (Merlin Terrill) Insurance Agency for many years. He was so close to Merlin that he delievered a fantastic eulogy at Merlin's memorial service three years ago. He will be missed, but I know that he is in Heaven with Jesus Christ by his side experiencing a joy that we simply cannot understand. My deepest sympathies to the Buursma Family

Dear Patty and Families: My deepest sympathy to you on Andy's passing. I remember the good times we had at 'The Barn' and as neighbors at Upper Silver Lake for over 23 years. The times we 'helped' start Cornerstone Church in Mears. It's been almost three years since Harm died. Another memory is that your brother-in-law, Rev. Bill; married us 58 years ago. Make God's comfort surround you.

Oh Pat...I just sent Andy something on Facebook an hour ago. My heart is in my throat. I am so very sorry for this heartbreaking loss for you and your family. You and Andy have been precious to me ever since Andy walked into our National Asparagus Festival office in Hart all those years ago and he asked to drive the Asparagus Queen in the Pentwater Homecoming Parade year after year. Always a faithful and loyal volunteer and supportive of me in all my involvement downtown. I smile at every Facebook post and accepting him being gone just doesn't want to register. To know he is with the Lord in heaven is my consolation. May God wrap His loving arms around you as you walk on. Prayers...
Much love in Christ,
Christine
