Paul Sanders Obituary

Dr. Paul W. Sanders III MT. PLEASANT - Dr. Paul W. Sanders III passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 in the Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church. Interment will be private. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. He was born in Charleston, SC on August 21, 1932 to Dr. Paul W. Sanders, Jr. and Florence Weaver Sanders. Dr. Paul Sanders graduated from Charleston High School and then attended the Citadel and Davidson College. He graduated from the Medical College of SC in 1957. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity. While at the Medical College of SC, he met his wife of 67 years, the former Iona Waters Edwards. He interned at the Medical College of Virginia from 1957-1958 in internal medicine and from 1958 - 1959 he did a residency at the Medical College of SC in internal medicine and general surgery from 1959-1960. He did a residency in urology at Tulane University Charity Hospital from 1960-1963. He then came back to Charleston, where he went into private practice with his father. Dr. Sanders was a Diplomat of the American College of Surgery and American Board of Urology. He was a member of the American Urological Society and the Pediatric Urological Society. He served as the president of Roper Hospital staff and chairman of the Department of Urology. He was a member of the SC Society, and the St. Andrews Society. He served as the president of the Widows and Orphans Society. He was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church. He was an outstanding amateur photographer. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Iona Sanders, his daughters, Brenda Sanders (Mario Portela), Diane Davis (Tim), and Lorraine Stockman (Chip). He is survived by 5 grandchildren, Miranda Manack (John), Winston Davis, Amelia Stockman, Chandler Davis (Mari) and Jacob Stockman. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Knox Manack, his sister, Neltie Sanders Linker, six nieces and nephews, and his loyal canine companion, Foxie (who stood vigil at his bedside).
